I' ve always been drawn to the writings of men & women who have put their thoughts down in a journal. To consistently write of their lives, surroundings, & thoughts, is downright amazing. The storyline revolves around a young girl, her family, & those good & sometimes not so good characters entertwining in their lives as she lives it & records it in her journal."My Father's World" is interesting, with the right amount of history/mystery to make for enjoyable reading. I shall look for the rest of the series, as well as more books by this author.

My Father World The Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister #1 Michael Phillips Judith Pella 9781556611049 Books Reviews
Corrie's story is a well written account of the life of a teenage girl, left alone to bring her siblings to California in search of her Uncle Nick after their mother dies on the trail. The story is one of hardship, as they face unknown trials, followed by great joy as they find more than they were searching for!
This book just grabbed me right from the first page. Could not put it down. Thru the eyes of a young girl and her family back in the goldmine days. Hard times, good times and family time!
I would give this book a Five star rating because the author really got you involved with the characters. It felt like you were right there with them. I would recommend this book to any one who likes Pioneer days.
Really enjoyed reading this book ,back those days were hard especially if traveling west or wherever, due to everything had to endure. Glad it all turned out good. Thanks for writing clean as well.
Interesting adventure with some character and relationship development. Authors style draws reader in and wanting more. Look forward to reading more in the series. Well done!
Well written story of a teenage girl who must become a mother-figure to her younger siblings on a cross country journey just after the California gold rush. Traveling from New York to California to live with their mother's brother, the newly orphaned siblings are helped along the way by some kind people. Eventually they connect with their uncle's business partner but no one can find their uncle. Corrie begins keeping a journal of what happens as they try to adjust to life without their mother and life in the wilds of California gold country. Can Corrie create a home for her siblings, find their uncle, learn why their father disappeared from their lives, and manage to deal with her conflicting emotions as she is forced to grow up quickly in a strange setting? I am looking forward to reading other books in the series!
I first borrowed this book from my local library, and it is one of my favorite going-west stories. I was so happy to find it available on and add it to my permanent collection. Corrie is a funny, likable heroine. Her mother advises her when she's 10, that she'll need some way to make her way in the world, because she "isn't the marrying kind," possibly a reference to Corrie's looks and freckled nose. Corrie is the oldest of 5 children. Their father left to go west, and when news comes of his death in California, they are struggling alone on their farm. Their mother decides to pack up and head west to California, to live with her brother Nick Matthews on his ranch. On the way, however, their mother dies, leaving 15-yr-old Corrie to look after her brothers & sisters with help from the kindly wagonmaster. But when they finally find their uncle, they are in for a very big surprise . . .
I loved the voice of Corrie in this book. It is easy to read, well-told, and descriptive of California during the Gold Rush era, from the viewpoint of a 15-yr-old girl. It also includes various descriptions of rascally characters they encounter on the way. All in all, a well-told Christian historical novel. It is very well-researched, but then, so is all of Michael Phillips & Judith Pella's work. I enjoyed the bits of humor interspersed in the telling. Highly recommended.
