The Foundling And Other Tales of Prydain The Chronicles of Prydain Lloyd Alexander 9780805080537 Books

Specifics: This is a hardcover collection of the five Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander: The Book Of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle Of Llyr, Taran Wanderer and The High King. It also includes The Foundling And Other Tales, Alexander's set of prequel stories. The only Prydain material not included are the two picture books he wrote: Coll And His White Pig, and The Truthful Harp. These were transcribed to short story form and are included in the modern printings of Foundling, I believe. There are sketches of the geography of Prydain, which I don't think are included in modern paperback printings, and there are rough illustrations in Foundling as well which I have not seen elsewhere. The binding is black, plain and unadorned. There is a dust jacket, though it was pretty destroyed on my copy, which I bought used for about $10. I'm okay with that.

Personal opinion on this particular edition: I already had the paperback editions of this series, and this gave me exactly what I wanted: the saga available in a single volume and in a form that looks more like an book for adults. The completionist in me really wishes the two missing stories were present, but you can get the one extra book if you really want to revisit them. I have searched and this seems to be the only one volume printing available. New copies run a little high. If you are buying it to actually read as I did, and not to collect, a used one at a bargain price should suffice. Just toss the dust jacket as I did!

The series: I assume anyone interesting in getting this edition already knows and loves these books. Still, here goes...This is among the best, if not the best, literature for young people ever written. It is essentially a coming of age story split into five highly engaging quests and set in a fantasy realm based on Welsh mythology, very much like Lord Of The Rings (also based on mythology from the same region, among others). The prose is very direct, and exceedingly graceful. I still put a few of its quotes to good use. The author wastes no time, so each story is full and strong. There is laughter, love, death, sacrifice, and extraordinary heroism in each volume. My only criticism is that the moral lessons conveyed within can at rare times come across a bit heavy-handed, but on the large part they are well earned and wholly gratifying. The characters are great, and after twenty years they are still with me. Disney's animated adaptation of The Black Cauldron, a slapdash combination of the first two books, though not without its (few) merits, does the books no justice whatsoever. What else can I say? I unabashedly love these books. Please read them: they deserve it, and so do you. They can only make your life and our world a better place.

The Foundling And Other Tales of Prydain The Chronicles of Prydain Lloyd Alexander 9780805080537 Books Reviews

I am just reading this for the first time in my mid-thirties. I must say, I absolutely love it. I have been a fan of the Chronicles for over two decades and this is a wonderful addition to the series. It expands on characters in Prydain that we all love. I don't think it matters if you read this without knowing the characters. However, if you've read the series before reading this, you will pull more out of it, and therefore love it even more.
Yes, it is geared to the younger audience, but if you grew up reading the series and have never read this, it is well worth picking up.
These stories are fun for fans of the original books. They fill in little gaps and layout a bit of the back story, but trying to read these tales without having read the original stories would likely take quite a lot away from them. To be sure, I did enjoy them and even wished that there had been more of them, but the experience just isn't as rich as the original tales were.
It was a good set of short stories about one of my favorite fictional fantasy kingdoms. It had different characters in different adventures. Don't miss it!
A wonderful mini last book to the Prydain series. Background bios of all our friends and some of the tools they used. Was almost waiting for Frodo and his companions to show up. Please get these to all children who love myths and magic
I grew up with the Prydain novels as a kid, and a few weeks ago I was feeling nostalgic for them. I bought The Chronicles of Prydain and devoured them in about a day, and when I got to the end I saw the link for The Foundling. For some reason I had never read these short stories and I had to pick them up.

The short stories are *really* short stories, but each one is filled with the delight that Lloyd Alexander puts into the Prydain novels. If you are a fan of Prydain, then you will love them. I just wish there were more!
I love this series by Lloyd Alexander and was super glad to find it all in one book. For those who love good vs. evil fights and are a big fan of The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and books by Madeline L'engle, etc. I would recommend this series. I was disappointed in the only movie from the series... the Black Cauldron.
Yes, you can buy them separately. But the all-in-one tome is the best way to enjoy the series. Alexander is a master of storytelling and characterization. The book is my favorite example of a bildungsroman...the story of one character's (Taran) coming of age. The side characters are the best, though. Faithful Gurgi! Good ol' Doli! Fludder Glam, the big hearted fibber of a pseudo-bard! And the chatty Eilonwy

Comparisons to Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia, and the Earthsea Cycle can be made. This series belongs in that lofty company. Earthsea is great for complex, tortured characters. LOTR is the grandfather of fantasy and is a literary masterpiece. Narnia has charm and childlike wonder. But the Prydain Chronicles have characters I love the most. It combines the coming of age motif of Earthsea with the whimsy and wonder of Narnia, with the folkloric roots of LOTR.
