"National Geographic" plus the Civil War got me all excited, but after perusing this, I worry about Geographic. It's actually little better than a regular issue, more like a "special edition" done by Geographic Traveler. With a number of glaring errors, and omissions, I was thoroughly disappointed. Possibly this was due to its editor being from a former Confederate state, but I think it's simply due to shoddy reportage.
I wasn't that interested in the material on Civil War enactments, so focused instead of the article 'Surrounded' about efforts to rescue wild koalas from an array of hazards in Australia such as becoming tangles in fences, dogs, disease, and cars. Those involved wear very thick gloves to ward off bites and scratches.
Before the arrival of Europeans more than two centuries ago about ten million koalas lived in a 1,500 mile range of eucalyptus forests. They're now down to 44,000 - 300,000, depending on whose estimate you believe. The Australia Zoo wildlife Hospital, built by Steve Irwin, helps with needed treatments.
This issue was missing the map of events in Gettysburg. The original issue, which I first saw at a friends house, included the map from National Geographic. I was not given a credit and the map was never received.
